Does a Treadmill or Elliptical Burn More Calories?

December 22nd, 2010

Both the treadmill and elliptical trainer provide workouts comparable to walking, jogging or running. And both sets of equipment can be effective tools for improving overall health and fitness. But is one of these machines more eSmooth 6.75 Treadmillfficient at burning calories? And if so, which one and why?

It’s possible to effectively burn calories on either the treadmill or elliptical trainer.  The number of calories burned during a workout, of course, depends on a number of variables, including the intensity and length of the workout.

If you’re willing to put forth the extra effort, you can optimize your calorie-burning efficiency during your exercise sessions. Below are some tips to ensure that you get maximum burn from your workout:

  • Run, Don’t Walk – Running on a treadmill will use calories faster than just walking. On an elliptical trainer, working at a faster pace will use up calories at a higher rate.
  • Exercise Longer – If you can’t exercise at a faster pace, try to extend the length of your workout. The longer you exercise on that treadmill or elliptical machine, the more calories and fat you’ll burn.
  • Increase the Intensity – By increasing the incline level on a treadmill or the resistance level on an elliptical trainer, you challenge your body to work harder. And you also increase the efficiency of your workout session and calories burned.

When it comes to burning calories, running on a treadmill is comparable to working out on an elliptical trainer. However, the elliptical trainer can help you burn more calories in less time than walking or jogging on a treadmill.

The moveable handlebars on an elliptical machine allow you to engage both the upper and lower body at the same time. By working the upper body, you get better cardio exercise. The more effort you put into working the handlebars, the greater the results of the workout.

When exercising the upper and lower body, you also work more muscle groups for a more effective total body workout, so you can burn calories more efficiently using an elliptical trainer than walking or jogging on a treadmill. Nevertheless, both the treadmill and the elliptical trainer provide excellent low-impact workouts. The choice is yours!
